Autumn is an ideal season for specimen carp fishing. Facing cold winter months, river carp feed heavily along riverbanks and soft-bottomed bays.
Locating Autumn Carp Holding Zones
Look for quiet river stretches away from strong currents:
- Deep River Bends (8–12 ft): Slow-moving pools where natural forage accumulates.
- Feeder Creek Mouths: Pockets where tributary creeks deposit organic material.
- Municipal Park Shorelines: Quiet areas where bank access is clear and water breaks slow down current.

Method Feeder Pack-Bait Setup
Pack-bait releases attractants into the water, forming a feeding zone around your hook bait.
The Setup
- Rod/Reel: 10′ or 12′ Feeder rod paired with a Baitrunner reel spooled with 15 lb monofilament line.
- Rig: Inline Method Feeder (1.5–2 oz) attached to a 4-inch braided hair-rig leader with a size 6 hook.
- Pack-Bait Recipe: Mix 4 cups of panko breadcrumbs, 1 can of creamed corn, 1 cup of quick oats, and 1 cup of sweet canned corn. Pack the mixture tightly around the method feeder, burying your corn-loaded hair-rig inside the ball.
The Technique
- Cast: Cast to your chosen river bend or mud flat.
- Position: Place the rod in a stable bank stick, engage the reel’s free-spool baitrunner feature, and keep line slack to a minimum.
- The Strike: Allow the pack-bait to dissolve on the bottom. When a carp picks up the hook bait, the rod will pull down as line peels off the baitrunner spool.
