Late fall (late October into November) offers excellent panfish opportunities. Crappie, bluegill, and yellow perch assemble into dense schools in deep water basins where they will remain throughout the winter ice-fishing season.

Mapping Pre-Ice Staging Basins

Search for wintering basins adjacent to summer habitats:

  • Deep Central Basins (16–22 ft): Flat, soft mud basins located in protected lake bays.
  • Deep Marina Entrance Channels: Deep channels that afford shelter from wind and wave action.
  • Submerged River Bed Channels: Deep cuts running through shallow bays.

Ultra-Light Vertical Micro-Jigging

Late-fall panfish move slowly due to near-freezing water temperatures; lures must present quietly with minimal movement.

The Setup
  • Rod/Reel: 6’0″ or 6’6″ Extra-Light spinning rod with a sensitive tip section.
  • Line: 3–4 lb clear fluorocarbon line.
  • Lure: 1/64-oz or 1/32-oz tungsten micro-jigs (e.g., tungsten ice-fishing jigs) tipped with a single waxworm, spike, or 1-inch micro-plastic tail.
The Technique
  • Positioning: Hover directly over marked schools using an electric trolling motor or anchor.
  • Presentation: Lower the micro-jig to the top edge of the school. Hold the rod tip motionless, giving only tiny quivers with your finger against the blank.
  • Bite Detection: Late-fall bites can be extremely subtle. Watch for your line to tick slightly, lift, or drift sideways, then lift the rod smoothly to set the hook.

Pigeon Lake Target Zones to Map Out

Focus on the deep basins inside Gannon’s Narrows and protected deep bays along the southern shoreline of Pigeon Lake. These locations often mirror your first ice-fishing spots of the coming season!
