During July and August, Pigeon Lake walleyes stay tucked inside thick cabbage beds feeding on perch. But as cooling September nights trigger shallow weed die-offs, decaying vegetation consumes dissolved oxygen. Walleyes pack up and head for deep, oxygen-rich drop-offs adjacent to main lake basins.
Tracking Autumn Walleye Migrations
Early fall walleyes move in tight, coordinated pods. They transition along structural highways where deep water meets hard substrate:
- Deep Boulder Ledges (12–18 ft): Sharp contours where shallow weed flats break into deep mud basins.
- Main Lake Point Extensions: Hard gravel and rock tongues jutting out toward deep open water.
- Sunken Island Saddles: Deep depressions between underwater humps that funnel yellow perch and shiners.

The Heavy Bottom Bouncer & Dragging Approach
Forget casting light jigs into shallow pockets. In the fall, covering water along deep drop-offs with a slip-rig or bottom bouncer is king.
The Setup
- Rod/Reel: 7’0″ Medium-Light fast-action spinning rod paired with a 2500 size reel.
- Line: 10 lb main braid connected to a 6-foot leader of 8 lb fluorocarbon.
- Rig: 1/2-oz to 3/4-oz bottom bouncer walking weight, 36-inch fluorocarbon leader, and a #2 wide-gap live bait hook.
The Bait & Technique
- Bait: Large jumbo nightcrawlers or medium emerald shiners hooked through the nose.
- Technique: Slow-troll or electric-drift along the 14-to-18-foot contour lines at 0.6 to 0.9 mph.
- The Retrieve: Keep your line at a 45-degree angle so the weight ticking along the bottom sends vibrations up the line. When you feel a soft thud, drop your rod tip toward the water for 2 seconds, then sweep the rod sideways to set the hook.
Pigeon Lake Target Zones to Map Out
Launch around Gannon’s Narrows or the southern public ramps. Map out the steep drop-offs extending off Gannon’s Narrows points and the hard-bottom contours running past Big Island. Look for stacked arches sitting right at the base of the break on your fishfinder.
