Wild European carp are among the hardest-fighting freshwater species in Ontario, yet they are widely overlooked. The Scugog River and surrounding Kawartha canal locks harbour double-digit carp that feed actively throughout the summer months.
Finding River Carp Feeding Corridors
Carp feed by filtering micro-invertebrates, seeds, and crustaceans out of soft bottom sediments. Look for:
- Slow-Moving Canal Curves: Deep outside bends where river currents deposit organic matter and nutrients.
- Bottom Mud-to-Gravel Transitions: Areas near lock gates and bridge abutments where soft silt meets hard gravel.
- Overhanging Tree Canopies: Natural shade spots where seeds and insects consistently fall into the water.

The Pre-Baiting & Hair-Rig Strategy
Carp possess keen senses of taste and touch. Traditional hooks poked directly through bait often cause them to feel the metal and spit the lure instantly.
- The Setup: A 10′ or 12′ medium-heavy feeder rod or carp rod paired with a “Baitrunner” style spinning reel (allowing line to pay out freely on the run). Use 15–20 lb monofilament main line.
- The Rig: Use a standard Hair Rig with a size 4 or 6 curved shank hook and a 2-ounce inline sinker (bolt-rig style).
- The Bait: Sweet canned corn or boiled field corn. Thread 3 to 4 kernels onto the hair extension behind the hook, leaving the hook completely exposed.
- Technique: Pre-bait your chosen spot 1 to 2 hours before fishing by throwing out 3–4 handfuls of sweet corn to draw a feeding pod into the area. Cast your rig gently, set your rod in a holder, engage the free-spool baitrunner function, and wait for the rod to double over on a run!
